The aim of the Urban Music Industry Conference is to foster and develop, support and champion a vibrant, dynamic urban industry in Ontario. Admission is $25 and includes the Keynote Address, Conference & Networking Reception. A two-day Conference Pass is available for $40. This panel will convene some of the key funders at various levels of government. Here’s your chance to speak directly to them on what the various programs are and what you need to know to be successful in your funding applications.

The Evolution of Social Networks and Music
11:45 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
The impact of social networks is being felt globally, outstripping e-mails as the primary way of communicating. This is causing momentous changes in the way we share information. That impact is being felt in music and how we discover new music. We’ll take a look at the current and future trends with a group of panelists on the cutting edge of this technological change.
Panelists: Hip Hop artist, Famous; DJ and Interactive Marketing Specialist, Lissa Monet; Shannon Watkins, EMI; Soul Hop artist, AKA Subliminal.

Festivals & Tours: Canada & Beyond

Festivals and tours are essential ways of generating income for many artists and have a growing importance as record sales continue to be sluggish. What and where are the opportunities for Canadian urban artists? Our panel will discuss opportunities for performing at festivals and on tours.
Panelists: Chris McKee, Mckee Agency; Neil Forester, The Substance Group; Michael Murray, Ontario Arts Council; and k-os.
Finding the Next Hot Producers
3:30 p.m. - 4:45 p.m.
A great producer is essential to the success of urban artists whether it’s rap or soul/r&b. Some super producers such as Kanye West, Timbaland and Dr. Dre have become a brand with their own records. Staying on the cutting edge as an artist means staying on top of the new crop of hot producers. This panel will explore who’s got next.
Networking Reception
5:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.
This is an opportunity to network with other artists and music industry people on a one to one basis. Contacts gained in this environment can go a long way towards developing successful careers.
